2024 Olympics: Simone Biles Reveals USA Gymnastics’ Real Team Name After NSFW Answer
View Date:2024-12-24 01:03:01
The late Betty White has passed the Olympic torch to a new bunch of incredible women.
After Team USA won gold in the 2024 Olympics women’s gymnastics final on July 30, Simone Biles continued to stick the landing by revealing their team nickname inspired by White’s legendary TV show about four older women.
“Okay on the real though,” Biles posted on X, formerly Twitter, “the official team name is golden girls.”
The reason behind the instantly iconic nickname? As the 27-year-old put it, “Because oldest Olympic team.”
And Biles is in great company. This new era of Golden Girls consists of fellow gold medalists Suni Lee, 21, Jordan Chiles, 23, Jade Carey, 24, and Hezly Rivera, 16.
But before Biles unveiled the team’s official name, she made headlines by joking about their NSFW team title during a press conference.
When three-time Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman asked the G.O.A.T., “What is your team name?” Biles responded with a hesitant, “Um…” to which Chiles pleaded, “Don’t say it.”
Biles ultimately relented, sharing the unofficial group name was “F Around and Find Out.” The press room filled with laughter as she put her head in her hands.
This buzzy name was certainly shocking, considering the Team USA gymnasts’ names in the recent past have included the Fierce Five, Final Five and Fighting Four.
“I feel like [this year] it has to be a little bit more younger [and] hip,” Biles told Today’s Hoda Kotb in early July. “Ask the TikTokers. They’ll think of something.”
Once she clarified the official name as the Golden Girls, many on social media were ready to vault into formation to support the squad.
“The 'Golden Girls' is a perfect name!” said Olympic champion and member of 1996’s Magnificent Seven, Dominique Moceanu, on X. “It beautifully captures both the team's seasoned excellence and glittering achievements.”
She rounded off her support by saying, “The journey of this team continues to inspire & shine bright!”
